Did Romney actually lose in Iowa?

The Des Moines Register is reporting Thursday that Mitt Romney ended up 34 votes behind former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in the Jan. 3 GOP presidential preference poll taken at party caucuses around the state.

Initially, Romney was said to have eked out an eight-vote victory over Santorum.

The newspaper also reports that results from eight precincts are missing, meaning the final tally will never been certain. Iowa GOP officials are now calling the results a “split decision.”

An announcement from Iowa officials is expected early this morning.
